The Beatdown was an attempted revival for the Newcastle LAN scene held in 2008, a couple of years after the ‘death of LAN gaming’ (2005). Organized by a team of ex ivLAN;) admins and thrax (playtopia.com.au) – the event was done in the classic format of non-stop gaming from Friday afternoon through to Sunday lunch and included 6 meals in the ticket price. Multiple tournaments were run and the event garnered sponsorship from companies such as Netgear, Altech, Thermaltake, Frucore, and more – including 2 shoutcasters from Gamestah making the trip up from Sydney to record and commentate tournament events live.
While originally imaged as a quarterly event, changes to function hire rules (laws?) ultimately meant that putting on an event in this format as a reasonable price was unfeasible anywhere (note: zLAN at the Newcastle Uni still continues thanks to agreements and subsidies within University facilities).
The overall attendance of The Beatdown reached over 200 gamers in what was possibly the hottest and sweatiest LAN Newcastle has even seen. Checkout the highlight video below for a glimpse into the madness that was
