How Housemarque built the audio for Saros's world of Carcosa

PlayStation Studios has posted a deep dive on the sound design behind Saros, built on the audio legacy of Returnal under what sound supervisor Loic Couthier calls "Refinement, not Reinvention". Some of the source recordings are odd: a didgeridoo became the basis for the Yellow King's voice and the wider Corruption sound palette, enemy drones were pulled from processed floppy disk recordings, and the ocean ambience came from recordings of prepared poultry and walnuts. Cosmic enemies blend Mongolian throat singing with shakuhachi, and the final mix was done at Abbey Road Studios across 3D Audio and Dolby Atmos. PlayStation's Accessibility Team helped build in separate controls for dialogue clarity, sound effects, and combat versus exploration music.

Ecstatica and Ecstatica II are back on GOG

Both Ecstatica games are now on GOG, rebuilt by SNEG to run on modern hardware. The original is a survival horror adventure set in the cursed village of Tirich, built entirely from geometric shapes rather than textured polygons, where you're exploring, fighting or dodging creatures and solving puzzles to lift the curse. Ecstatica II has you playing a prince returning to a kingdom wrecked by demons, casting spells and fighting your way toward restoring the Elder Sign to free the sorceress Ecstatica. GOG's also got the soundtracks and 8K pre-rendered backgrounds up as extras.

Carmichael started building it in October 2024 after a layoff and just before his first child was born, working from tycoon games like RollerCoaster Tycoon and The Sims rather than other survival games. Your first staff member is a survivor named Robin, after his son, and players on YouTube and Twitch have made a point of keeping him alive through the whole playthrough.
